Where to hold your phone

Updated Nov 3, 2026← All help topics

Most failed installs come down to where the phone is. Your phone and your PULSE talk over NFC, which only reaches a few centimetres, so both antennas need to line up and stay still for the whole install.

Where the antennas are

  • On the device: under the black front panel, right at the POWER switch.
  • On an iPhone: along its top edge, the end with the camera.
  • On an Android phone: on the back, lower down than an iPhone’s. The exact spot depends on the model.

iPhone

Put the top edge of your iPhone on the black panel, right over the POWER switch, much as you’d bring two iPhones together for AirDrop. Not the back of the phone, and not the bottom.

Android

Lay the phone flat on the black panel, with its NFC spot over the POWER switch. If the first try doesn’t connect, slide the phone a little up or down and try again.

Then hold still

  • Keep the phone there until the app confirms. A frequency change takes a few seconds; Device Setup takes about ten.
  • On iPhone you’ll hear the same sound as a tap-to-pay payment, or feel a buzz if it’s on vibrate, and the screen changes.
  • Take off a thick or metal case first, and make sure the device is switched on.

If it fails partway through, nothing is harmed. Line the phone up again and retry. See An install failed.
